Governors are responsible for:

• setting the vision, ethos and strategic direction for the school, which includes agreeing priorities, policies and targets for the school
• monitoring the educational attainment of pupils and holding school leaders to account where any improvements need to be made
• ensuring our schools’ financial resources are properly and effectively spent
• Governors are not responsible for the day to day management of the school; this is the responsibility of the Headteacher.

The Governing Board:

SETS THE STRATEGIC DIRECTION OF THE SCHOOL BY:

• Setting the values, aims and objectives for the school;
• Agreeing the policy framework for achieving those aims and objectives;
• Setting targets;
• Agreeing the school improvement strategies which includes approving the budget and agreeing the staffing structure.
  
  CHALLENGES AND SUPPORTS THE SCHOOL BY MONITORING, REVIEWING AND EVALUATING:
• The implementation and effectiveness of the policy framework;
• Progress towards targets;
• The implementation and effectiveness of the school improvement strategies;
• The budget and the staffing structure;
  
  ENSURES ACCOUNTABILITY BY:
• Reviewing and signing off the school’s own self-evaluation report;
• responding to Ofsted reports when necessary;
• holding the Headteacher to account for the performance of the school;
• ensuring parents and pupils are involved, consulted and informed as appropriate;
• making information available to the school community.
  
  THE GOVERNING BOARD ALSO:
  Appoints and performance manages the Headteacher who will deliver the aims (through the day to day management of the school, implementation of the agreed policy framework and school improvement strategy and delivery of the curriculum) and report appropriately to the Governing Board.

Role of Individual Governors

The Governing Board is a corporate body. This means that Governors share collective responsibility and individual Governors can only act on behalf of the Governing Board if they are given authorisation to do so. Within the Governing Board some Governors hold specific positions of responsibility, as set out below.

• The Chair of Governors is responsible for the overall effectiveness of the governing board. They set the agenda for Governing Board meetings and, if necessary, can take urgent decisions in between meetings.
• The Vice Chair of Governors supports the Chair in carrying out their role and can act on the Chair’s behalf if the Chair is absent.
• The Chair of the Resources Committee is responsible for the effectiveness of their committee and setting the agenda for committee meetings.
• We also have a number of Link Governors, who are responsible for visiting our school in between meetings and monitoring progress in key areas such as Safeguarding and SEN.
