Clanfield Church of England Primary School

Cycling

During year 5/or/6 your child will be offered a place on the Bike ability Training Course and will need to meet the following requirements:
  • Have a bicycle which is in good roadworthy condition. Your child’s bicycle will be checked by the course instructors at the first session.
  • Wear a correctly fitting cycle helmet at all times during the training. Your child will be given a leaflet to bring home which explains how a helmet should fit.
  • Ideally children should have experience of riding their bicycle, and have good bike control. Instructors will check this out through a series of test exercises at the first session, held on the playground area. They will decide whether your child is ready to do ‘on road’ training.
  • Children are expected to behave sensibly and ride safely. (They must not endanger themselves, the other children who are training or other road users)
  • Children should wear long trousers and long sleeved tops for the training.
  • Complete a written test based on the Highway Code.  A booklet about the Highway Code will be given to your child alongside weekly homework to practice at home, parental support is a great benefit alongside the instructors training.
Our instructors are people who work for Bike ability, who have been DBS checked and trained to help children to reach the standard required to pass a safe cycling test. Training takes place at a road junction near to the school.
We are pleased to be able to offer this training which encourages children to be safe cyclists.
