An Ethical Curriculum
Celebrating and championing
Inclusion, Equality and Diversity

Picture
At Clanfield Church of England School we propose an Ethical Education Curriculum which encourages children to explore their own spiritual identities in a secure setting while also being aware of and respecting the notion that other people may think differently to them. The curriculum allows exploration of other cultures, perspectives and raise awareness in children of issues of human rights, justice and equality in society.

The curriculum celebrates differences and champions diversity in all its forms, including race, religion, gender dis/ability and life choices. Through a better understanding of the issues that impact our own community and communities afar, the children will develop a greater sense of responsibility, the impact of their actions, and an awareness of what is it to be a global citizen.

The ethical curriculum is woven into the teachings of the compulsory National Curriculum. Topics for each term and each class have been carefully chosen and designed to lean towards an ethical issue that is relevant to the children’s lives or relevant to the wider world. A few examples of how this is evident are below:

Science: Study of the impact of female and BAME scientists
Art - study of artists who are disabled
DT - using recyclable objects to create models and sculptures
PSHE - challenging stereotypes and attitudes
Geography - understanding the impact of humans and pollution on our environment
History - study of how BAME and LGBT+ individuals have positively impacted on society
Assemblies and collective worship - reflecting on how our core values shape us and shape society

In addition to delivering an Ethical Curriculum within the compulsory curriculum, we offer opportunities for our pupils toflourish and develop holistically in order to be their best selves.

Lean In Girls’ Circle and promoting equality

Our Lean In Girls Circle is a weekly coaching group that ultimately aims to motivate our  young girls to lean in, actively participate, take up challenges and grow in confidence and resilience. The group undertake activities and discussion to help them grow spiritually, share their aspirations, re-frame situations and study positive female role models.

LGBT+ Community and promoting equality
Through ensuring our curriculum focuses on different and diverse communities, we enable opportunities to celebrate equality, diversity and challenge HBT (Homophobic, Biphobic, and Transphobic) bullying.

The Church of England Education Office offers advice on how to do this well within our Christian ethos: “Opportunities to discuss issues to do with self-esteem, identity and bullying, including HBT bullying, should be included in physical, social, health and economic education or citizenship programmes. The curriculum should offer opportunities for pupils to learn to value themselves and their bodies. The Church of England’s teaching on human sexuality and a range of Christian views should be taught, as well as a range of perspectives from other faiths and world views. One of the four strands of the Church of England Vision for Education is dignity and respect. Part of this vision is to create a culture where children can grow to be content, living well in their own skin, and happy for others for the skin they’re in. This happens best in a culture of love that accepts, forgives and keeps faith with children and young people as they explore questions of identity and selfhood.”

Images around school aim to give more representation to those from LGBT+, ethnic minority and culturally different backgrounds. We want our pupils to celebrate diversity, equality and we are proud to be a school where all of our community feel welcome.

Eco Warriors and promoting an awareness of our environment
Our Eco Warrior group have a shared interest in sustainable living and the environment. Meeting each term, they discuss topical issues that impact on the school, our community and wider world. These may include better ways to recycle within the school, or the effect of plastic pollution on the sea. Each meeting is minuted and actions from the meeting are worked on by the team. The Warriors also plan to share their learning and recommended reading with the rest of the school community.

School Council and promoting leadership
The elected school council have an input in the way the school runs, in that they are the voice of the pupils and their opinions and interests help drive our school and curriculum forward. Meeting regularly and speaking on behalf of their peers, the school councillors are able to articulate with confidence the issues of concern to them.

Anti-bullying Ambassadors and promoting empathy and agency
Our anti-bullying ambassadors are a trained group of children who have a growing understanding of both the impact that bullying can have on children and positive strategies for supporting children who have experienced bullying or are part of controlling friendships. Our ambassadors deliver termly assemblies on topics related to bullying and positive friendships.
